Gold Star History
The Fred Meyer Gold Star Club was started by Fred Meyer’s wife Eva C. Meyer, on April 1, 1948 when she saw a need to support associates who were going through financial difficulties. Emerging three years after the end of World War II, its mission was to provide charitable assistance to Fred Meyer employees in times of crisis caused by unfortunate events such as a terminal illness, accident and injury, domestic abuse, or death of a spouse. Mrs. Meyer recognized that employees sometimes needed a little help to get back on their feet after a personal financial setback.
Since Mrs. Meyer founded Gold Star, the organization has extended a helping hand to thousands of Fred Meyer associates. Over the years, funds have been used to provide food, clothing, and shelter to help associates through various daunting challenges in their lives. The Gold Star emblem encompasses Mrs. Meyer’s original intention. Each of the five points of the star represents the values important to the Gold Star Club–Faithfulness, Merit, Graciousness, Service and Charity. The beginning letters of these values are also the initials of the Fred Meyer Gold Star Club (FMGSC). Members of the Gold Star Club Committee were expected to possess and demonstrate these values both within and outside the work setting.
The original Gold Star Club creed was “Each Gold Star Club member will be FAITHFUL to duty and MERIT goodwill. GRACIOUSNESS of personality will be evidenced in SERVICE and CHARITY to all.
Not only was Gold Star’s objective to provide charitable assistance to employees and their families in time of need, but also to promote fellowship and goodwill and encourage participation in civic and company activities among the employees of the Fred Meyer Organization. Current support for Gold Star now comes from two main sources. Fred Meyer Stores donates a portion of its profits to the Gold Star Club each year, and Fred Meyer associates raise money through various events and through personal donations from the heart.
